Swindon advocacy and children’s rights
“I have found that having an advocate has made my life easier because it has enabled me to get my personal views across without having to tell other people about them. My advocate is lovely, supportive and is really kind. She has helped me in so many ways and I liked her from the very start. I also think the charity she is with Coram Voice is great as you get many opportunities to do lots of fun activities. And I think the best thing about having an advocate is that you know you can always trust them.”
Services provided in Swindon
Swindon Borough Council has contracted Coram Voice to provide them with a Children’s Rights Service, which has three distinct parts: Advocacy, Independent Visiting and Participation. If you are a young person you can read more about how you can get involved in our participation activities here.
We offer an advocacy service to all children in care and to those children over 7 years of age who are subject to Child Protection Procedures.
Advocates are champions of children’s rights and will ensure that the wishes and feelings of each child we work with are at the forefront of any decisions affecting their lives.
We have skilled advocates who are trained to help children and young people express their views. This could be when they:
- Want support at reviews and other meetings.
- Disagree about plans being made.
- Have concerns about their care.
- Need to make a complaint.
The advocacy service is about empowering children and young people to ensure their views are heard and acted upon by decision makers and to help children and young people to navigate and negotiate the child care system.
The take up of advocacy in child protection is the highest that Coram Voice have experienced due to the unique service that is offered in Swindon. All young people subject to child protection over the age of 7 are automatically referred for advocacy and the service is offered directly to the young person by an advocate.
