Measuring well-being: A literature review

How do we define ‘well-being’ and what are some of the common difficulties we face with measuring it effectively?

Selwyn, J., & Wood, M. (2015). Measuring Well-Being: A Literature Review. University of Bristol

Measuring well-being is a literature review which seeks to define the concept of well-being, and the difficulty we face in measuring this multi-faceted concept. The review delves into children’s well-being bringing together the debate on international approaches of children’s well-being, and in particular how to measure the well-being of looked after children.

This literature review supports the Bright Spots Programme, a research project between the University of Bristol and Coram Voice. The Programme aims to improve the care journey for all looked after children and highlight the ‘bright spots’ of practice within local authorities that contribute to the positive aspects of being in care. The intention is that local authorities will understand the causes of those bright spots so that they can adopt the very best standards of care.
