Updated DfE guidance implements recommendations from The Grand Campaign

  • 5 March 2025

Coram Voice is delighted that last month the Department for Education updated the Children Act 1989, now recommending that the setting up home allowance for care leavers should be a minimum of £3,000.

This follows The Grand Campaign by A National Voice, which found that not all local authorities had increased their allowance from £2,000 to £3,000, in line with Government policy. ANV found that standards differ depending on where a young person lives. ANV called on Government to update the guidance to reflect the minimum allowance, and to work with care-experienced young people to ensure the riles are fair for everyone, no matter where they live.

The changes to the guidance make sure there is clear information for young people and the local authorities that work with them on what should be available. This is a great success for A National Voice and the ANV Ambassadors who worked on the campaign.
