I have a background in Law and have always been interested in children’s rights and making the law more child centred. I was looking to do some voluntary work and fortunately I came across Coram Voice. When I found out about the work they do, it really inspired me. I was very keen to give my time to work that felt like a difference was being made for children who really need the help.

Once I became an advocate I quickly learned how complicated the issues are and how they often draw on so many different areas. You end up learning about a variety of different fields. It is a never ending learning experience!

My proudest moments are when we have done safeguarding referrals that have led to local authorities taking direct action to house homeless children the same day. It is wonderful to know that we helped. The young people are always extremely grateful. I have seen children who have received advocacy become more confident and self-assured when it comes to their rights. I have also seen these young people unafraid and unashamed to ask for the support that they should be receiving.

My one big ambition for advocacy is to see it expanded into other areas where there is a real need for support. I think there should be advocacy all over the UK for homeless young people, for care leavers navigating the housing system and disability advocacy for both children and parents.
