A programme of activities to help young people build skills, confidence and friendships

Peterborough’s young people developed a programme of fun activities and creative workshops to tackle social isolation, improve employability and support mental health.

Why?

The Peterborough Care Leaders, from Peterborough City Council, identified key issues faced by local care leavers, including social isolation, employability and mental well-being.

What?

To tackle these challenges, the group carried out their own survey and successfully secured a £4,000 grant to deliver an eleven session programme. Activities included first aid training, cooking, Couch to 5K, water sports and creative art workshops – all designed to build skills, confidence and friendships.

The sessions also led to recognised qualifications such as Level 3 First Aid and Food Hygiene certificates, helping young people strengthen their CVs and feel proud of their achievements.

What difference did it make?

Young people described how the experience helped them become more active, socialise and feel part of a supportive community. They spoke about how sport, creativity and teamwork helped them feel accepted and confident to explore future goals.

The project has had a lasting impact on wellbeing, confidence and motivation, inspiring the group to continue creating new opportunities for care leavers in Peterborough.
