Why?
The ANV AMPLIFY awards aim to champion and recognise the work of children in care councils and care leaver forums. They were held in October 2024 (Amplify – Coram Voice) – Sunderland’s Change Council were nominated for the ‘Campaign award’.
What?
Sunderland’s Change Council understood how difficult it can be to move into your own home and feel like your cooking skills are lacking. They created a ‘Care Experienced Cook Book’, which breaks down easy recipes such as how to boil an egg, how to make pasta, all the way to meals that can be batch cooked, desserts and snacks!
The cook book broke down even the simplest recipes and techniques such as:
- Gas Mark-Temperature conversions
- How much each meal costs to make
- How many portions you can make in a batch
- What equipment you might need
- How long it can be frozen for
- AND… the cook book is wipe clean!
What difference did it make?
The Change Council really wanted the cook book to make an impact. Now, any young person in Sunderland who moves into their own property will receive a free copy of the cookbook to get them started.
They also created starter kits for kitchen essentials – spices, salt and pepper, oil etc, which our young people will also receive from Next Steps when they move out.
This means that the young people of Sunderland are better prepared to be able to cook healthy, budget friendly meals which can be cooked in batch and frozen, rather than struggling in the kitchen.
The cook books are also sold at events and to professionals to continue to raise money to restock the books when needed!
