Why?
Bright Spots findings in Telford highlighted the importance of children understanding why they are in care. Telford and Wrekin Council recognised that this is about more than just having the information. It’s about understanding your own story, having a sense of identity and belonging, and making sense of what has happened in your life. Telford wanted to strengthen their life story work so that children could better understand and record their experiences.
What?
The council strengthened its focus on life story work and embedded the Coram Storyteller app. The app provides a digital record of a child’s journey, helping to capture and organise their life story. It was rolled out across Telford and Wrekin, with Liam, one of the council’s care-experienced apprentices, playing a key role in advocating for its use.
Impact
The Storyteller app has become an important part of the council’s approach to helping children understand their experiences and identity. It is one example of how Bright Spots findings have led to changes in practice, alongside a wider focus on listening to children and young people and acting on what they say. Telford sees life story work as a way of ensuring every child has the opportunity to understand their story in an honest, kind and age-appropriate way.
