test page: My rights when I’m in care

When you’re in care it’s really important that you feel informed and involved about everything that’s happening in your life. This is an introduction to your rights and the help and support you should be getting.

A law called the Children Act says two things:

  • Children’s Services must keep you safe.
  • They must listen to you when they make decisions about your life.

Whatever happens next, you always have the right to say what you think, and to ask for help if something isn’t right.

This page covers the things you’re most likely to want to know:

  • why you’re in care
  • your say in decisions
  • what happens at your review meetings
  • who all the different people in your life are
  • seeing family and friends
  • being moved
  • your health
  • your education
  • money

Some words have a dotted line underneath them, like IRO. Tap or hover over one to see what it means, without leaving the page.
