This workshop is designed for advocates who already have some experience and training in providing non-instructed advocacy (NIA)
This may include advocates supporting young people with significant learning disabilities and communication barriers, very young children, and those unable to instruct due to a mental health condition.
We know that where young people are unable to submit their own complaint, they can be left even more vulnerable to having their rights breached, or their unique preferences overlooked. However, many advocates will experience particular challenges in writing a complaint on behalf of a young person who is unable to instruct them. It is therefore important that advocates know how to approach this skillfully.
We have created this workshop to explore the challenges of writing non instructed complaints, and how we can overcome these. This is a space to upskill and reflect together on good practice in writing non instructed complaints. The session will involve discussing specific examples/case studies which our specialist advocate will provide.
Important notes:
- This session is not an introduction to the basic principles of NIA. This is covered in a separate online training, which would be more suitable for those with little or no NIA experience. Please contact us for further details if this training would be more appropriate for your needs.
- To ensure you are able to participate fully in the session, we ask that you are able to commit to one hour for completing pre reading/activities prior to the session. Please do not sign up if you are unable to set this time aside during the few days prior to the workshop. Reading will be sent out in advance and you will be asked to bring this along to the event.
- Joining instructions will be distributed once places are confirmed.
