Am I a care leaver?

Our online tool to help you understand your care status and what support you are entitled to

If you have spent any time in care after your 16th birthday, then it is very likely that you will be entitled to support from Children’s Services as a care leaver, up to age 25.

It can be very complicated to know exactly what support you should be getting from Children’s Services. We have tried to make things a bit easier for you, by answering the questions you can learn more about the support you should get.

But you should always get professional advice about your leaving care status and your rights. You can ask your personal advisor (PA), a social worker, an independent advocate or advice service.

If you spent time in care as a child before being under a Special Guardianship Order (SGO) you may be a care leaver, usually a qualifying care leaver. If you were Privately Fostered you may also be a care leaver. You should not rely in this tool but get professional advice based on your individual circumstances.
